Biography
Sebastián Etchemendy is Professor at the Deàrtment of Political Science and International Studies at Torcuato Di Tella University, Argentina. He holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Buenos Aires and a PhD from the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His general field of work is Comparative Politics and comparative methodology in Political Science. He specializes in the Comparative Political Economy of Latin America and Western Europe, with a particular focus on the study of socio-economic policy and business and labor actors. He received the International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) from the Social Science Research Council in New York, as well as Fulbright and Antorchas scholarships.
He has worked and published on the political economy of countries such as Argentina, Spain, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, Peru, Mexico, and Uruguay, among others. He has published individual articles in Comparative Political Studies (2) , Comparative Politics , Latin American Politics and Society (2), Journal of Latin American Studies , and Desarrollo Económico , and co-authored articles in Politics & Society (2), Latin American Politics and Society, Socio-Economic Review, and Desarrollo Económico. He has also published Models of Economic Liberalization: Business, Workers and Compensation in Latin America, Spain and Portugal (Cambridge University Press 2011, EUDEBA 2015) and Labor Outsourcing in Argentina: Diagnosis and Union Strategies (co-author and editor, Biblos 2018).
Between January and May 2007, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University, USA. From 2011 to 2015, he served as an advisor to the Minister of Labor and later as Undersecretary of Labor Policy Planning at the Ministry of Labor, Argentina. In 2022, he was appointed Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor of Latin American Studies at Harvard University, where he taught Comparative Political Economy of Latin America.
