Honors is Latin American and Caribbean Studies
Students may graduate with honors in Latin American and Caribbean Studies by completing a senior honors thesis or project under the supervision of a primary faculty advisor and a second reader. Honors projects are substantial, original research or creative works that reflect a deep engagement with the region. Completion requires dedication, intellectual curiosity, and ongoing coordination among the student, advisors, and the concentration advisor to ensure timely progress and fulfillment of academic standards.
Eligibility
To be eligible for honors in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, students must:
- Maintain a minimum Aā average in the ten courses counting toward the concentration.
- Maintain at least a B+ average in all coursework at Brown.
- Earn a grade of A on the completed thesis or project.
Grades of āSā do not negatively affect eligibility for honors.
Candidates should discuss their plans with the Director of Undergraduate Studies during their sixth semester and should submit their honors proposal by the end of their sixth semester or no later than the beginning of their seventh semester.
Declaration of Intent
Students must declare their intentions to pursue honors by the last day of exam period of their junior year by submitting a one-page Honors Thesis Declaration Form to the concentration advisor. This form is available online on the LACA Undergraduate Concentration website and must include a working title, a short description of the proposed thesis or project, and the signature of the primary advisor. Students must designate a second reader by September 28 of the senior year (or March 1 for mid-year students) and faculty must confirm their willingness to serve in this capacity by sending an email to the DUS.
